Peripheral Artery Disease Q&A

What is peripheral artery disease?

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common condition that occurs when you have narrowing or blockages in the peripheral arteries, which are the arteries in the arms and legs. The narrowing and blockages occur from plaque buildup along the blood vessel wall.

What are the symptoms of peripheral artery disease?

PAD doesn’t always cause symptoms. However, the most common symptom of PAD is leg pain when walking or climbing stairs that go away when you stop. This type of leg pain is called claudication.

Other PAD symptoms include:

  • Achiness or fatigue in the legs
  • Change in leg hair growth
  • Change in toenail growth
  • Weak pulse in the feet
  • One leg feels colder than the other
  • Nonhealing sores on the legs or feet

People with a history of high blood pressure or smoking are at greater risk of developing PAD. If you have leg pain or risk factors for PAD, schedule a consultation at Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care.

What tests diagnose peripheral artery disease?

Dr. Lathia is an experienced and skilled board-certified interventional cardiologist. He conducts a comprehensive cardiology consultation to determine what types of tests you need.

Some of the tests he may perform to diagnose PAD include:

Ankle-brachial index (ABI) test

The ABI test compares the blood pressure in your arm to the blood pressure in your leg. A weaker blood pressure in the leg indicates PAD.

Lower extremity ultrasound duplex

The lower extremity ultrasound duplex is a vascular imaging test that allows Dr. Lathia to evaluate your peripheral arteries, looking for areas of narrowing or blockages.

Diagnostic peripheral angiogram

A diagnostic peripheral angiogram is an X-ray that uses a special dye to highlight the movement of blood through your arteries.

Dr. Lathia may also recommend an intravascular ultrasound, which evaluates your arteries from the inside using a special catheter with an ultrasound tip that goes directly into the artery.

What are the treatments for peripheral artery disease?

Treatment for PAD depends on the severity of your symptoms and narrowing. Initial treatment focuses on lifestyle changes and medical interventions to improve blood pressure and cholesterol.

Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care is a state-of-the-art cardiology practice where Dr. Lathia can perform minimally invasive endovascular procedures, such as peripheral angioplasty and stenting or atherectomy to open narrowed or blocked arteries.
