Stress Testing Q&A

What is stress testing?

Stress testing is a cardiology test that looks at how well your heart works when it’s pumping hard. Some heart conditions ― like coronary artery disease ― are easier to diagnose when your heart is beating harder.

Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care is a state-of-the-art cardiology practice committed to providing the best care possible for the community they serve. They offer stress testing to diagnose and manage heart conditions.

Who needs stress testing?

You may need stress testing if you have concerning symptoms that indicate heart problems and other tests have failed to provide definitive answers. For example, Dr. Lathia may recommend stress testing if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue easily during exercise and an electrocardiogram (EKG) failed to show why.

He may also recommend stress testing if he has concerns about an irregular or rapid heartbeat. Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care may also do stress testing to monitor heart health after implementing a cardiac treatment plan.

Some people may need stress testing before starting an exercise program or having a surgical procedure.

How do I prepare for stress testing?

The team at Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care provides you with specific instructions on how to prepare for stress testing. They request you come to your appointment dressed in comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes for exercise.

You may need to modify your medication schedule, and the team may request that you stop eating and drinking at a set time before your appointment.

What happens during stress testing?

Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care offers the exercise stress test. During this test, you walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike in order to get your heart pumping.

First, Dr. Lathia reviews your medical history and checks your blood pressure. Then a technician attaches electrodes to your chest, arms, and legs that monitor your heart’s electrical activity during the test.

You then start exercising at an easy pace, and the technician slowly increases the intensity of your workout. You continue to exercise until your heart reaches a target rate or you have chest pain or shortness of breath.

The team at Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care monitors you for 10 to 15 minutes following your stress test. Dr. Lathia will review the test results with you and your treatment plan.
