Vein Care Q&A

What is vein care?

Vein care refers to the health of your veins. Your veins are lined with valves that open and close, helping push the blood toward your heart for reoxygenation.

If you have damaged valves or damage to the walls of your veins, the valves may not fully open or close, affecting blood flow.

Dr. Lathia is an experienced cardiologist who diagnoses and treats conditions affecting vein circulation.

What conditions benefit from vein care?

Many conditions affect vein health and benefit from vein care. At Complete Cardiac & Vascular Care, Dr. Lathia treats:

Varicose veins and spider veins

Varicose and spider veins are visible veins that affect the look or texture of your skin. These visible veins result from damage to the valves or walls of your veins, allowing blood to flow back and pool. The pooling blood causes the blood vessel to expand, becoming visible.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

DVT is a blood clot in a vein. When left untreated, a DVT may break free and travel to the pulmonary artery, leading to a pulmonary embolism (PE). PE is a life-threatening condition that causes shortness of breath and requires emergency room care.

Venous insufficiency

With venous insufficiency, the blood pools in the legs, causing ankle edema and skin discoloration.

What are vein care treatments?

Dr. Lathia performs various procedures to treat venous conditions. Some of the vein care treatments include:

Iliac vein stenting

For this procedure, Dr. Lathia places a metal stent in the iliac vein in the abdomen to improve blood flow. Narrowing of the iliac vein may cause venous insufficiency or DVT. Placement of the stent may prevent venous problems.

Radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to shrink and close a diseased vein. Dr. Lathia inserts a catheter into a diseased vein to deliver the heat energy that causes the vein to collapse. Your body then reroutes the flow of blood through a healthier vein.

Dr. Lathia performs radiofrequency ablation to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency.

Thrombolysis

Thrombolysis is a minimally invasive procedure for DVTs. Dr. Lathia uses a catheter to deliver clot-dissolving medication to the blood clot to break it up.
